Description
Representing over four years of research and development, Behringer’s MS-5 faithfully delivers the distinctive sonics and unique layout of the infamous early Japanese dual mono synth in all its “two-timing” glory. It utilizes the same analog pathway, matched-value transistors/JFETs, and the dual VCO, VCF, CVA, and LFO “two of everything” design behind the creatively inspiring interface and distinctive sonics. True to Behringer form, the MS-5 is equipped with modern digital connectivity options and is offered at a price that makes this sought-after, hard-to-acquire analog-era classic accessible and affordable.
Vintage synth enthusiasts will do a double take when they see and hear how immediately familiar the MS-5 is, not to mention the flexible, nuanced sound creation potential. Likewise, players starting their vintage-style analog synthesis journey will love the massive sounds and intuitive, flexible architecture.
The MS-5 is loaded with 2 huge-sounding VCOs, each with selectable triangle, ramp, square, pulse wave shapes, variable pulse width, and soft/hard sync. A pair of flexible LFOs add a triangle, sine, square waves, pulse rate, and a switchable pink/white noise generator. The dual (ASDR/AD) Envelope Generators, 4-pole high pass, and low pass Filters provide an extra layer of creative control. Additionally, an LFO-controlled ring modulator can be added to either (or both) VCOs or any external sound source, adding a metallic touch to anything from fat bass riffs and screaming leads through spaced-out effects and more. The MS-5s perfectly recreated mixer section features 5 easy-to-use sliders for tweaking each VCO, noise, ring modulation, external audio signal, and an additional bandpass filter with frequency, resonance, and level controls.
Like the mid-70s classic, the MS-5 has 71 dials, switches, and sliders for intuitively easy sonic sculpting. It also has upgraded performance details like the adjustable angle control surface and significant enhancements like the 37 full-sized semi-weighted velocity-sensitive keyboard for an additional layer of artistic expression. Vintage-style connectivity includes a CV/Gate in and out for external equipment, pedal inputs for filter cutoff, and Oscillator pitch control. Modern connectivity includes full MIDI implementation, MIDI channel, and voice priority selection for unlocking the MS-5’s potential in today’s digital domain.
